Renewable energy operations glossary

The terms that come up when wind, solar, and BESS teams talk about performance, defined in plain language.

Agentic AI
AI systems composed of autonomous agents that can plan, investigate, and act toward a goal without waiting for a query or a threshold breach. In renewable operations, agentic AI continuously investigates plant data and verifies the root causes of losses without being asked to.
Anomaly detection
Identifying patterns in operational data that deviate from expected behavior, such as a solar string producing less than comparable peers under the same irradiance. Anomaly detection works from learned baselines, where alarms work from fixed thresholds.
Availability
The fraction of time an asset is capable of producing (or, for BESS, dispatching) when conditions allow. Contractual availability guarantees between owners and O&M providers make accurate, cause-attributed availability accounting commercially important.
BESS (Battery Energy Storage System)
A grid-scale battery installation, comprising battery racks, a battery management system (BMS), power conversion system (PCS), and energy management system (EMS). BESS revenue depends on availability, round-trip efficiency, and managing degradation.
Capacity factor (CUF)
Actual energy produced over a period divided by the energy the plant would produce running at nameplate capacity the whole time. A headline metric for plant productivity; in India commonly called Capacity Utilisation Factor.
Curtailment
Deliberate reduction of a plant's output below what it could produce, usually on grid operator instruction or due to negative prices. Curtailed energy must be separated from performance losses when analyzing plant data, since the two have entirely different remedies.
Degradation
The gradual loss of capability as equipment ages: solar modules typically degrade ~0.4–0.7% per year, and battery cells lose capacity with cycling and time. Tracking actual degradation against warranty curves protects the asset's business case.
Energy loss accounting
Attributing the gap between a plant's theoretical and actual production to specific causes such as downtime, curtailment, soiling, or underperformance, so each lost megawatt-hour has an owner and a remedy.
Inverter
The power electronics that convert DC from solar modules or batteries into grid-compatible AC. Inverter faults, derating, and efficiency drift are among the largest single-point loss sources in solar plants.
Modbus
A widely used industrial communication protocol, common in solar inverters, meters, and BESS equipment. One of the standard interfaces through which analytics platforms read plant data.
OPC UA
Open Platform Communications Unified Architecture, a vendor-neutral industrial data protocol widely used by SCADA systems. The modern standard for secure machine-to-machine data exchange in energy plants.
Performance ratio (PR)
A solar plant's actual output divided by its theoretically possible output given measured irradiance and nameplate capacity. PR strips away weather effects, making it the standard measure of how well the plant itself is performing. Typical utility-scale values are 75–85%.
Power curve
The relationship between wind speed and a turbine's power output. Comparing actual production against the expected power curve (adjusted for air density) is the fundamental method for detecting wind turbine underperformance.
Root cause analysis (RCA)
The investigation that traces a symptom (an alarm, an anomaly, a production shortfall) back to its underlying cause across electrical, mechanical, and environmental factors. Traditionally a manual engineering task; the core of what SanchAI's agents automate.
SCADA
Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition, the system that monitors and controls plant equipment in real time. SCADA is the primary data source for renewable analytics, but it is built for control and protection rather than for finding gradual performance losses.
Soiling loss
Production lost to dust, pollen, or bird droppings on solar modules. Varies strongly by site and season; quantifying it per block turns cleaning from a calendar activity into an economic decision.
State of health (SoH)
A battery's current usable capacity as a percentage of its original capacity. The key indicator of BESS aging, tracked against warranty degradation curves.
String
A series-connected group of solar modules feeding one inverter input. String-level monitoring is the finest practical granularity in most utility-scale plants, and it is where most recoverable losses are found.
Yaw misalignment
A wind turbine persistently pointing slightly off the true wind direction. Even a few degrees of static misalignment reduces annual energy production measurably, and it is detectable from operational data patterns.
